Neck and Shoulder Tension — TCM Food Therapy & Dietary Approach
Neck bi syndrome (neck impediment) often results from prolonged sitting with the head lowered and chronic strain, compounded by wind-cold-dampness lodging in the channels, or from trauma and blood stasis blocking the collaterals.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Patterns
In TCM, this concern is differentiated into several patterns, each with a classical herbal formula:
Wind-cold fettering the exterior with discomfort of the taiyang channel qi
Formula: Ge Gen Tang (Kudzu Decoction) — from *Treatise on Cold Damage*
Wind-dampness in the exterior with obstruction of the channels
Formula: Qianghuo Shengshi Tang (Notopterygium Decoction to Overcome Dampness) — from *The Theory of Internal and External Injuries*
Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis with Static Blood Obstructing the Collaterals
Formula: Shentong Zhuyu Tang (Generalized Pain Stasis-Expelling Decoction) — from *Corrections of Errors in Medical Classics*
Liver-Kidney Deficiency with Sinews and Bones Failing to Be Nourished
Formula: Duhuo Jisheng Tang (Angelica Pubescens and Loranthus Decoction) — from *Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies*
These formulas are for reference under TCM syndrome differentiation and should only be used under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

Dietary Principles
- Favor foods that may support dispelling wind-cold and relaxing the sinews and channels (kudzu root, mulberry twig, scallion, ginger, cherry, dried ginger).
- Favor foods that may support invigorating blood and dissolving stasis (hawthorn, peach kernel, rice-field eel).
- Favor foods that may support tonifying the liver and kidney (black bean, black sesame, goji berry, mulberry, walnut, lamb).
- Favor foods that may support nourishing qi and blood (red date, longan, grape, donkey-hide gelatin).
- Favor warm foods; keep the neck and shoulders warm and avoid drafts.
- Avoid raw, cold, and iced foods.
- Avoid fatty, greasy, and pungent foods and strong alcohol.
- Avoid prolonged sitting with the head lowered over a desk.
Understanding the Condition
Neck bi syndrome (neck impediment) often results from prolonged sitting with the head lowered and chronic strain, compounded by wind-cold-dampness lodging in the channels, or from trauma and blood stasis blocking the collaterals; obstructed qi and blood may be associated with pain from blockage. In older age, liver-kidney depletion and qi-blood insufficiency may be associated with pain from lack of nourishment. The condition is root deficiency with branch excess.
